Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek Itinerary
We take a flight to Biratnagar and then use a jeep to reach Taplejung. From Taplejung, our trek to Kanchenjunga Base Camp begins, passing through the large settlement of Limbu people. The journey to Taplejung is a picturesque drive where we catch glimpses of Mt. Kanchenjunga and Mt. Jannu. Along the way, we see pasture lands and small villages.
The name Taplejung comes from combining the name Taple with the Limbu word jung. Taple was a medieval Limbu king who once ruled the area, and Jung in Limbu language means fort. So, Taplejung literally means Fort of King Taple. Taplejung is a lively town with narrow streets. Alternatively, there is an option to fly directly to Taplejung.
After leaving Taplejung, we follow a wide trail that gradually descends toward the Tamur River and Mitlung. The path takes us through big cardamom farms and a few small villages before we reach the river at Mitlung. After leaving Taplejung, we follow a wide trail that gradually descends toward the Tamur River and Mitlung. The path takes us through big cardamom farms and a few small villages before we reach the river at Mitlung.
After leaving Mitlung, the trail becomes a narrow footpath winding through rice fields, cardamom farms, and barley fields. After walking for about an hour, we come across a bridge over the Sisne Khola. Crossing the bridge and continuing along the eastern bank of the Tamur River, we reach Sinwa Bazaar. This is a small market where we see Limbu settlements, a high school, hospitals, and a police checkpoint.
We keep following the Tamor River for another one and a half hours and stop at Tawa village for lunch. After lunch, we walk on a zigzag path for about one hour, leading us to Thiwa Village. From there, we climb a bit before crossing a suspension bridge at Thiwa. The higher path goes up before descending into Chirwa, where we will spend the night at a teahouse.
Today's trek takes us along the Tamur valley all day until we reach Sukathum. The trail offers a variety of landscapes, with ups and downs through dense forests. After a couple of hours, we reach Taplethok, where our trekking permit is checked as we enter the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. We cross a suspension bridge over the river and continue on the west bank, passing by a cardamom farm. After crossing the Khakshwa Khola, the path becomes easier, winding around the hillside above Temewa. Following the trail along Simbuwa Khola, we eventually reach a bridge that takes us to Sukathum, where we will spend the night at a teahouse.
Today's journey becomes challenging as we climb higher on a narrow trail. Leaving the Tamur River behind, the route now follows a more impressive canyon-like gorge along the Ghunsa Khola. We press on, crossing a suspension bridge and entering dense forests filled with bamboo trees, Utis trees, and various types of trees. After crossing another suspension bridge over Ghunsa Khola, we reach Jaubari, where you can enjoy the sight of a beautiful waterfall.
Continuing along Ghunsa Khola, we head to Lamatar, where we pause for lunch. After our meal, we navigate a zigzag trail and venture into thick forests. Crossing one more suspension bridge, we gradually ascend for about 2 hours along straight trails, leading us to our camp at Amjilosa. Tonight, we'll rest at a teahouse.
We make our way down the river as the valley opens up. The trail is surrounded by beautiful flowers like rhododendron, camellias, and azaleas, along with bamboo and cardamom. Our path leads us to Phole, a Tibetan settlement where you can buy handmade crafts from the locals and visit the monastery.
